Bonjour et bienvenue à la classe de français. We are looking forward to the new school year and working with you. The curriculum expectations for FSL are organized into four distinct but interrelated strands: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Listening and Speaking in French are the springboards to reading and writing. If you hear it, you can say it. If you can say it, you can read it. If you can read it, you can write it. It is important to take risks when learning another language. We will attempt to provide a variety of instructional strategies in order to help you with your learning and risk taking in French class.

We are excited to be your guide for this new year on your language journey. French allows us to communicate with others, increases our knowledge of the world in which we live, helps us better understand ourselves and our language, and opens doors to interesting career opportunities in the future.

In addition to supplementary class and online resources, units from the Core French Program (C’est Parti 4, 5 and 6) and (Odyssée 7 and 8) will be used at each grade level.

Although we will be posting materials and resources on Google Classroom and using wordreference.com, the recommended materials for French class for Grades 4-8 are: a French binder (1 - 1.5 inch), five dividers and a French/English dictionary (if possible)

The 5 dividers can be labeled with the following sections:

  • Référence – notes, vocabulary, and language structures
  • À l’écrit – written tasks and rough drafts
  • À l’oral – listening activities, minidialogues and oral presentations
  • La lecture - pre, during and post reading activities
  • Les examens - assessments

Work habits in all of the learning skill areas (Responsibility, Organization, Independent work, Collaboration, Initiative, and Self-regulation) will ensure success in all that you do. Assessment will consist of ongoing review of your work and your progress through conversations, observations, reflective learning opportunities and products.

Please ask questions if you don’t understand. We will try to clear up any confusion at that time, or we can make arrangements with you for extra help. We are here to help you on your learning journey. As the year progresses, we will inform you of interactive French websites which you can visit to help reinforce your learning while still having fun!

Seek opportunities to practice French as much as possible in the classroom and outside of the classroom. 😃

Merci beaucoup,

Mme MacDonald
